Esor is committed to a safe and healthy working environment, preservation of the environment and ensures strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993 and the National Environmental Management Act.

Maintaining the health and safety of our employees as well as the communities in which we operate is one of our material issues. While we operate in an inherently a high risk industry we are committed to our moral and legal obligation to safeguard the wellbeing of our people. Our approach to health and safety is to ensure it comes first at all times and that there are no shortcuts. Our aim is to create a culture where every employee understands the importance of working safely and can go home safe and healthy to their family after every shift. We believe that a safe site is a productive site and that safety and production go hand in hand.

SHEQ Co-Ordinators are in place in all regions (East Coast, West Coast, Africa and Inland) and each site has a qualified H&S Officer.  Regular site visits are conducted by the SHEQ Co-Ordinators and Group SHEQ Manager.  Six Montly compliance audits are conducted on all sites to ensure SHEQ compliance.  There is one health and safety representative for every 50 employees.

Although the LTIFR rate reached 0,47 at times during the year we ended the year with an improved rate of 0,29.

Esor holds the following safety, quality and environmental accreditations:

• ISO 14001:2004

• ISO 9001:2008

• ISO 18001:2007

and external audits are performed accordingly.

A number of external audits on health and safety as well as the environment were conducted during the year with the group achieving compliance scores ranging from 88.79% to 99.00%, with the majority being above 98% which is on par or above industry norms. Corrective action has been taken to address all areas of non-compliance.

Formal SHE policies are in place and are reviewed biannually and whenever changes in legislation occur.  We ensure strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993 and the National Environmental Management Act. The Group SHEQ Manager is responsible for ensuring policies are adhered to across the group, supported by the Inland and Coastal SHEQ Managers and site safety officers.

We have a structured risk-based approach to safety and a detailed risk assessment is undertaken for each product type and specific tasks and risks are then rated and mitigated accordingly. This report is incorporated into the site-specific health and safety plans.

The following measures are in place to prevent casualties and injuries:

• Direct EXCO input and report back;

• Divisional Safety Committees;

• Toolbox Talks;

• Safety alerts;

• Near miss reporting;

• Health and safety investigations;

• Corrective coaching; and

• Disciplinary action in the event of proven negligence.

The environment

We remain committed to minimising our environmental footprint. The group is ISO 14001 accredited, a standard that addresses environmental management systems. We have a set of objectives and targets in this regard which are updated annually.

The group is committed to the ongoing environmental education of its employees. Esor did not receive any fines for environmental non-compliance.

The group also a member of Birdlife South Africa.
