Dr Oswald “Ossie” Franks is the Executive Dean of Engineering at the Nelson Mandela University since July 2013.  Ossie previously held the positions of CEO of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), Dean of Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Project Mechanical Engineer at the Rossing Uranium Mine in Namibia.

Ossie is a registered Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.) with ECSA and has broad industry and academic experience.  Furthermore, he is an experienced Board member with service in both the private and public sectors. 

He is eminently qualified with a PhD (Engineering Science) from the University of South Florida (USA), Masters in Industrial Administration and a BScEng (Mechanical) both from UCT, a Honours degree in Business & Administration from Stellenbosch Business School, and a Government Certificate (Mechanical) Mines & Works from the Department of Minerals and Energy.
